Where our data comes from
Every rank, count and chart comes from the US Social Security Administration's baby name files, which list every first name given to at least five babies in a year from 1880 to 2024. Meanings and origins are written from standard etymologies and reviewed, and disputed meanings are labeled as such. How we source names and meanings
Frequently asked questions
How does the baby name generator work?
Pick any filters you like (sex, first or last letter, syllables, origin, meaning, style and popularity) and press Generate. The tool draws a fresh, varied set of names from 24,000+ names given to US babies, weighted toward names with a full profile page. Every click gives a new mix.
Where does the popularity data come from?
All counts and ranks come from the US Social Security Administration, which publishes every first name given to at least five babies in a year, from 1880 to 2024. We rank names ourselves from those counts, so every page uses one consistent ranking.
How can I check a name with our surname?
Type your surname into the generator. Each result then flags an initial that matches the surname, a rhyme, or a name that ends with the same sound the surname starts with, so you can spot awkward combinations early.
Can I save and share names?
Yes. Tap the heart on any name to add it to your shortlist. The shortlist is stored only in your browser, and the share button creates a link your partner can open to see the same list.
What does popularity tier mean?
Top 100 and Popular (top 1,000) come from the latest national rank of the name's most common sex. Uncommon covers ranks 1,001 to 5,000, and Rare is everything below that, down to names given to only a handful of babies.
